Sieg’s Second Soiled After Martinsville Melee
March 30, 2009After a soggy Saturday in Martinsville, Virginia the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returned to Martinsville Speedway for the running of the Kroger 250 Monday, March 30, 2009.
The heavy rains that were forecasted all weekend held off long enough for the Camping World Series to complete one full practice and half way through the final practice on Friday when the skies opened up. Shane Sieg was satisfied with his practice session and showed that by placing the No. 15 Woodard Pools Toyota Tundra on the outside pole for the 250 lap event with a time of 20.075 seconds at a speed of 94.326 mph Saturday morning. Again, rain returned forcing the delay of the race until Monday.
Sieg, in his career best start, missed a shift going for the green flag causing a accordion effect forcing Ron Hornaday into the rear of his No. 15 Woodard Pools Toyota Tundra. Sieg was able to recover but lost positions on the .526-mile paperclip shaped track in Martinsville, Virginia.
The young driver making only his second start at the short track managed to dodge several incidents and with the help of his Billy Ballew Motorsports team had the truck dialed in running in the sixth place position when he came in for his scheduled pit stop. But a pit road penalty for not blending while exiting pit road sent him to the tail end of the longest line restarting in the 23rd-place position on lap 121.
Sieg battled hard to pick up the 17th-place position on lap 154 when a competitor in front of him came to a sudden stop in the corner, sending Sieg hard into them. With hard frontend damage Sieg’s Tundra began to overheat, going to the garage for repairs putting him 53 laps down when he returned to the track, relegating him to a 32nd-place finish.
The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is off until Saturday, April 24, 2009 where Sieg will take to the track at the Kansas Speedway.
